CFP: "Bad" Food in the Middle Ages (A Roundtable) ICMS, Kalamazoo, May
7-10 2020
by Alex Kaufman
“Bad” Food in the Middle Ages (A Roundtable)
Sponsored Session of the Medieval Association of the Midwest (MAM)
International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, MI, May 7-10, 2020
Food studies is an interdisciplinary field, one that encourages dialogue
between anthropologists, historians, literary scholars, sociologists, and
others situated in the broad humanities. This roundtable will examine ways in
which food as nourishment, ritual, and symbol had negative connotations in
the medieval world. It will explore how food was used to mark difference,
control or subjugate others through customs and laws, and solidify structures
of power. Moreover, presenters will be encouraged to make connections between
“bad” food in the Middle Ages and today and discuss ways in which tastes,
perceptions, and practices have continued (or not) and why.
Proposals (250 words) for presentations of no more than 10 minutes should be
sent to Alex Kaufman (alkaufman@bsu.edu [1]) no later than Sept. 15, 2019.
Proposals should be accompanied by the Participant Information Form,
available at https://wmich.edu/medievalcong ress/submissions [2]. Those who
are not currently members of the Medieval Association of the Midwest are
welcome to submit to sessions sponsored by MAM but are expected to join ($35)
upon acceptance. Proposals that are not accepted for the session will be
forwarded to the Congress Committee to consider for inclusion in one of the
General Sessions.
