He was a wonderful man to know: erudite, genial, imaginative, humorous, generous, cosmopolitan.

He wasn't just a "professor" of the humanities; he was a model.

Alain Renoir was a great man, a great teacher, and a great scholar. He would also disapprove of my use of "great," both substantively and stylistically. That's the way he was.

I am saddened to learn of his demise. I liked his wit and his sense of humor. He was very supportive of me and my early work at UC Berkeley. And yea, he was "Great."!

Alain was brilliant, humorous, so alive as a teacher and a person. i was fortunate enough to have his medieval english lit class. i never missed a single lecture. i had lunch with alain and his partner, pat, a few years ago. i told them how he touched my life in his teaching. of course, he jumped about and laughed. what a great man.
